The Last True Vampire (Last True Vampire series) - Kate Baxter

For some reason, I have a habit of comparing vampire books to Twilight now. If you dig deep enough, you will find similarities. They are both stories about vampires, after all. Besides Claire having awesome-smelling blood, there's not much the same between the two.

Mikhail has lived a lonely existence the past few hundred years. He is the last of the Ancient Ones, the only living vampire in existence. A race of dhampirs rely on him for strength, but lately, he 's been waiting until the thirst is too much to bare before he feeds. Which is the reason for his rendezvous at the club when he catches the scent of Claire's blood. Mikhail instantly follows the smell and when he sees Claire, he knows he's found the one who has returned his soul to his body. Now he just has to convince her to become the new queen of the vampires.

I've never read a vampire romance quite like this one. There is only one real vampire, a ton of dhampirs, the Sortiari (the influencer of fate), and berserkers (who do the dirty work for the Sortiari). It was action-packed and steamy, a good combination. When Claire gets thrown into the world of the supernatural, and is informed of what her position may be, she stand her ground and gives herself time to form her own opinions. She is someone who perseveres, and her affection toward Vanessa (a little girl in her apartment building who is growing up in the same situation as Claire did) shows what kind of person she really is, instead of her "hustler" side. Mikhail, like any other alpha male, seemed controlling, but was really trying to protect his soul mate. When they were together, I could almost see the sparks flying.

I do know what this is the beginning of a series, so I'm not too disappointed that I didn't find out more about Vanessa. I'm sure we will find out later, and I'm kind of excited to read Ronan's story. I especially want to know how he handles Siobhan, now that he may not belong to her. Looking for a hot vampire romance? The Last True Vampire fits that description!
