Ghosts From Our Past Review
Ghosts from Our Past: Both Literally and Figuratively: The Study of the Paranormal - Abby L. Yates, Blakemore Erin/ Gilbert Tavia (NRT), Andrew Shaffer

Let me start out by saying that I have not seen this movie yet but I do intend on watching it even though I have had a few people tell me they didn't like it. It's probably just because it's hard to improve on the classic film. However, if the film is anything like this book I know I will enjoy it. I laughed quite a bit while reading this story. It didn't take much imagining to be able to hear and picture Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig in my mind while reading about their childhood and research of the paranormal in later years. Andrew Shaffer did an amazing job capturing their personas.

I am told Ghosts From Our Past makes an actual appearance in the film which is always cool. The illustrations drawn by Abby and Erin to go along with their research are a nice little add-on. This book mixes what would be real topics from a paranormal guide with humor and tie-ins from the movie to make it a fun and enjoyable read for anyone who is a fan or interested in all things supernatural.

If your looking for something lightweight that you can just kick back and relax with for a few laughs, you should pick this book up and read it now. Recommended!

Wonderland: A Coloring Book Inspired by Alice's Adventures - Amily Shen

This is a wonderful adult (or kid) coloring book! Anyone who likes Alice in Wonderland will love this book! The images are well drawn and inspire creativity. Once I received it and looked through it, I gave it to my daughter who absolutely adores the book. Highly recommended!

The Mapmaker's Children Review
The Mapmaker's ChildrenThe Mapmaker's Children by Sarah McCoy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars

The Mapmaker's Children is an interesting historical fiction story revolving around the daughter of abolitionist John Brown in the late 1800s and a modern woman who moved into a house connected to Sarah Brown in 2014.

Their existences may be many years apart, but there are similarities between the women that cross the boundaries of time and those similarities help the modern woman realize and accept her place in life. See the difference when comparing a woman from the past who cannot have kids, with a woman from the twenty-first century who is in the same boat, was an eye-opening experience. Sarah sacrifices everything because she knows living in the 1800's, she needs to be able to bare children in order to have a husband. However, Eden is married to a man who is wholly devoted to her while she has trouble accepting the fact that she is barren.

Although I enjoyed the story, I believe my favorite was the small essay in the back that the author wrote about her research on the topic. It's always nice when an author gets personal. One thing that disappointed me, though, was the fact that I was hoping to find out about Eden's fertility situation before the ending of the book. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book to any historical fiction or women's fiction fan.

The Witch's Daughter by Paula Brackston
The Witch's DaughterThe Witch's Daughter by Paula Brackston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"If you will listen," I said, "I will tell you a tale of witches. A tale of magic and love and loss. A story of how simple ignorance breeds fear, and how deadly that fear can be. Will you listen?"

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was hoping that I would like it but didn't really know what I was in for. This is historical fiction intertwined with supernatural wonder to birth a compelling story of a witch who is just trying to live her life but has been on the run for hundreds of years.

Bess escapes death in the days when hangings, beheadings, and burnings were a public spectacle that drew a large crowd. In order for her to slip away, though, she had to accept the dark magic into her soul. Knowing she couldn't go back to the man who put her on that path, she decides to run and continues to do so throughout the book. Bess slowly befriends a young girl, Tegan, who quickly becomes someone Bess feels protective of. During her time with Tegan, she tells her stories of her life although Tegan doesn't know they are about her at the time the first two are told.

Those three sections are probably my favorites of the entire book because they take place at different time periods in history including the European witch hunts, 1880's London with Jack the Ripper, and the First World War. It was interesting to see how Bess handled those situations while trying not to use her power. Even though it was dark magic, she did use it to do good but using it at all made it easy for Gideon to find her, so she was taking quite the risk.

One thing I really liked about Bess' character was the fact that she was practically a women's rights activist centuries before it became popular. Her mother raised her to express her own opinions which is something that rarely happened in the 1600's.

I kept feeling sorry for her every time she thought she had feelings for someone. I don't want to give away too much but because of her situation, it was never the right time. Therefore, it was a relief when she was finally able to confide in Tegan. Although not a romantic relationship, it was a relationship nonetheless.

If you like to read stories about witches or if you like historical fiction, I would recommend this book to you.

My Best Friend's Stepfather by Opal Carew
My Best Friend's StepfatherMy Best Friend's Stepfather by Opal Carew
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Copyright Night Owl Reviews

My Best Friend's Stepfather is my first book by Opal Carew. There have been so many good ratings on most of her other books and I was excited to get started on this one. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for me. I wasn't bad, it started out good, actually, but even when I read erotica, I like for there to be other things going on as well and I felt like this one just had a little too much filler. I just didn't connect with it. The story line was fine but I needed more content than just sex scenes. However, if you're just looking for something steamy to get you through all this snowy/cold weather, this book is for you.

Ashley is writing an article for the magazine she works for on the relationship between Doms and Subs. The Dom that she is interviewing just happens to be the ex-stepfather to a friend that Ashley had in high school. Although I never really felt as if Ashley and Helen were friends, which could be the point of that relationship. I also needed more information on why Helen is the way she is. I understand that she didn't really have that stability in her life of a father figure but she is just diabolical.

When I first started reading this book, it felt a little rushed to me. Then I realized it was book two in a series and there may have been some background information in the first one I may have missed, but this one is still OK to read as a standalone. There is so much emotion in this book, especially in the last thirty minutes or so of the book. That part made me change my mind about the rating. I was going to give it a three and a half star rating but it received a boost up to four stars. That's how much I enjoyed those last few pages.

Duke King hasn't seen Grace Truman since he got sent to jail because of her. He knows that her pompous father had her sent away for running around with the likes of him. She's the judge's daughter, he's the town drunk's son. Their worlds were not meant to collide but you can't help who you love. When Duke goes back home to Destiny, Nevada because Lolly, the aunt who raised the three King boys, is in the hospital, she asks him to talk to Grace who just moved back to town with her son. Upon their first meeting in thirteen years, the chemistry is still there and he finds himself in quite the predicament before too long.

Raging Sea (Stone Circles #2) by Terri Brisbin
Raging Sea (Stone Circles, #2)Raging Sea by Terri Brisbin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Copyright Night Owl Reviews

Raging Sea is the second book in author Terri Brisbin's Stone Circles series. Let's get all the normal mumbo jumbo out of the way and then I'll tell you what I liked about it. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I think you will benefit more if you read them in order. Near the middle of the book the characters from the first story join in with their fellow warriors. I really enjoyed watching it all come together. They really are starting their own little community against evil.

The best thing about this book is the fantastic imagery I was able to conjure up in my mind based on the author's descriptions. This is medieval times on the islands of Orkney we're talking about here and I felt like I was really there. Orkney has always been a place I wanted to travel to and it was an amazing feeling to be able to experience that with this book. I know I said this with the first book in this series, but I would love to see these brought to life on the big screen.

Bridesmaid Blues by Boone Brux Excerpt

After a few minutes, both men exited a room at the back of the store. The breath slammed to a

screeching halt in her chest. The white shirt pulled tight across his pecs, accentuating the vee of

tanned skin and sunkissed hair. Her mouth went dry.

The guy could wear a paper bag and look great. So flippin’ unfair. "Hey." Jamie’s blue eyes leveled on her. "Have you been waiting long?"

"Just got here." She repressed the sigh threatening to escape. To the untrained eye, the tux

didn’t appear to need any adjusting, the material hugging his best features. "Looks good." He

turned toward the wall of multiple mirrors and examined his image. "Really?" "The cut is perfect

for you." Adam ran his hands across Jamie’s upper back, smoothing the material. "With a little

adjustment it will be perfect."

"Good." Jamie tugged on his sleeves, looking slightly awkward.

"Where did you get all those muscles?" She shifted and crossed her legs.

"What do you mean?" His brow pinched. "I always had these."

"Trust me—" She paused for effect. "You didn’t." "Are you saying I was wimpy?" He scowled at

her. "Not wimpy—really." As long as she’d known him he’d never been wimpy, but she wasn’t

going to tell him that. "Just not as buff."

He grunted and refocused on his reflection.

"I think we need to take it in right here a bit." Adam knelt and fiddled with the seam at Jamie’s

outer thigh. The material pulled tight across his rear end. "Maybe a quarter inch."

Her gaze zeroed in on Jamie’s tight buns. Yeah, those were nice—and always had been. The

memory of wrapping her legs around him and gripping his firm cheeks sent a flood of heat

through her body.

Stop it. "What do you think?" Adam looked at her. She held up her thumb and index finger.

"Maybe a little more." He scowled at her for a few seconds before tugging the material tighter.

"How about that?" She motioned for a bit more and with a pinchedlipped smirk, Adam

complied. "I can see you in the mirror, ya know," Jamie said. "And if you make these any

tighter everybody at the wedding is going get an eyeful."

Busted.

"I agree." Adam gave Dani a gentle but chastising look before turning back to Jamie. "You need

to be comfortable." "Okay, but you’ll be disappointing a lot of women at the wedding." Her job

was to keep him occupied, not flirt. "And some men." Jamie’s gaze narrowed, but she returned

her sweetest smile, ignoring the way her body hummed with awareness at being so near to him.

A wedding. An ex. And a secret.

I was so excited to read this story after seeing the book trailer for it. If you had not had the pleasure of viewing it, allow me to post the link for you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxnzE...

Kendall Ryan knows how to deliver the heat and it starts on the very first page! Just so you know, you'll have to read this book to understand the storyline but Nolan is not a cheater. I mean c'mon! He's a Navy Seal, you know he's honorable! He found out that he needed these two women for very different reasons. Daniella and Nolan both were sort of using each other as a shield to protect themselves from acquiring a broken heart. Then he meets Lacey. He can't bring himself to treat her like all of his other side dishes. Waiting on their romance to play out was one of the best things about Bait & Switch.

I was honestly surprised to find out who Lacey was. I kind of thought the "special assignment" had something to do with her, but I never thought that was the reason why Nolan's boss was so concerned about it. It's really hard not to give away any spoilers, by the way, but I'm trying. I did find it a little odd that Nolan didn't pressure Lacey to find out more when she told him she was running from something. He is an ex-Navy Seal after all, it seems like he would want to know what he's getting into, but to be fair, he was already protective of her and maybe in too deep. Of course, everything is explained near the end and it all comes together in a good way. You do get an HEA.

Kendall Ryan shares a personal story with her readers in the author's note. It was a situation that gave her a deeper connection to this story. I think it was brave of her to include it and it's great that she trusts her readers so much that she knows she can share things like that.

Greyson's book is next and it sounds great! I can't wait to read it! This book releases on 2.9.16 and you should definitely grab a copy!

The Heart of It by Molly O'Keefe Review
The Heart of ItThe Heart of It by Molly O'Keefe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Heart of It was originally published in the Summer Rain anthology. Proceeds from that anthology go to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network). If you would like to buy this anthology, here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Rain-Lov...

Because proceeds of the anthology go to RAINN, it's easy to guess that these novellas are going have difficult subject matters. The tables are turned a little in this story since Gabe is the victim. He is trying to overcome the demons from his past. Little did he know that help would come in the form of a woman he requested from an escort service.

Molly O'Keefe is a phenomenal writer. How she can pack so much heart into such a short story, I'll never understand because I don't have that talent, but I am sure glad she does because I have enjoyed every book I've read by her.

This has to be the most intense novella I have ever held in my hands. It gives us a sense of hope. It lets us know that you can overcome things easier when someone believes in you. It also leaves us wanting more.

I do recommend that you read this story if you are a fan of M. O'Keefe or contemporary romance. It doesn't take long and I think you'll be just as amazed as I was about all the emotion dumped in this compact story.

Getting Rough is the second book in the Monkey Business Trio series. It picks up right where Playing Dirty left us on a cliffhanger and I have to say that I enjoyed this book even more than the first! The author does mention that this book was personal to her because she poured herself into it and you can really see that shining through in the story.

I absolutely loved the laid-back atmosphere of this book. Cassidy goes back to her hometown of Stonington, Maine, because her mother fell from a ladder and was in the hospital. Shaw finds out where she went and follows her under the pretense of telling her he knows she won Denver Rockford's contract fair and square but she turned it down and practically handed it over to Shaw.

Misconduct Review
MisconductMisconduct by Penelope Douglas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Copyright Night Owl Reviews

My first book of 2016 and it was a five-star read for me! Off to a good start!

I have heard a lot of good things about Penelope Douglas and now I know why! Misconduct is a standalone contemporary romance with an HEA, but I wish it was a series because I am not ready to give these characters up! The New Orleans atmosphere and engaging storyline really drew me in. When I did have to put this book down for real life, as soon as I continued my reading session, I was instantly hooked again.

Say hello to Tyler Marek, owner of the world's third largest construction company, possible US Senate candidate, and alpha male extraordinaire. I loved Tyler and Easton's first meeting and also the second meeting, and well, let's be honest, every meeting after that. The chemistry between these two was off the charts! I loved Tyler's confidence but there is also an insecurity there that only Easton can see. Or maybe she brings it out in him.

Statue of William Wallace.

Rise of a Legend was a great read for me because I love history, romance, and Scotland. Although this book leans more toward historical fiction, there is a developing relationship involving a known historical warrior and a not-so-ordinary historical journalist who is partaking in an archaeological dig. When she is presented with a medallion and given a warning not to change the past, she finds herself magically transported to Scotland in the year 1297 and right into the arms of William Wallace.

Whatever It Takes is the sequel to Right Where You Are by L.E. Bross. This is the author's first New Adult series and I have only one thing to say about that: Please keep writing these NA books!

Ryan was a character from the first book that I was hoping to learn more about and I got what I asked for. He shies away from commitment, mostly because Tess, the love of his teenage life, left with her dad and never looked back. Then, almost immediately after, his mother walked out on him and his father. At the rip young age of sixteen, he had to become the man of the house because his father could no longer handle the position. I loved his hard-working, carefree take on life. Deep down, he's a really good person, which is proven in the way he handles Noah in the book.

Never Tear Us Apart Review
Never Tear Us Apart (Never Tear Us Apart, #1)Never Tear Us Apart by Monica Murphy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first thing you should know about Never Tear Us Apart is the fact that it deals with some tough issues. The author's note at the beginning of the book gives us fair warning. She knows that some people won't be able to handle the subject matter. The bad thing about this story is that things like this do happen in real life, but the good thing is, this one is completely fictional. So, if you're willing to take the plunge, you'll discover Katherine's inspiring struggle to be normal again. You'll also discover that some bonds are never to be broken.
